For so long we have viewed the availability of energy as a right, such a fundamental need that we cannot imagine our modern day life at home or in work without it. We are likely to see a quantum shift in our way of thinking. Organizations will likely have to pay for the right to use energy in future, unless they are seen as being very efficient and taking steps to improve. As such, the market for retrofits will likely accelerate, even as government incentives help to pay for such costs. Energy efficiency solutions will be front and center and innovation will spur technological advances like never seen before.
Outside of government, commercial buildings have been estimated to account for as much as one fifth of the total volume of carbon emissions clogging the air above the United States. This is a primary market for energy efficiency solutions, therefore and a variety of different market forces are at work to ensure improvements.

If you have been charged with the responsibility of comparing capital expenditure associated with HVAC install costs, retrofitting or taking no action then you have to take into account more than just the direct costs associated. These days, anything that uses a significant amount of energy is likely to be inefficient and be responsible for too many carbon emissions. A retrofit solution that has been tested on a nationwide basis has been found to cut energy usage associated with Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems by an average of 30%. This particular solution can be installed by Airco Energy Solutions in under 30 minutes and can result in a positive return on investment in as little as 6 to 18 months. Such a solution should be actively considered by every organization, as it will soon be necessary for them to be seen to be sustainable and to be taking action to reduce energy usage.
HVAC systems are not known for their overall efficiency, as they have a particularly difficult task to achieve when trying to maintain efficient temperatures within often hostile environments. The systems are designed to create modified conditions within a contained area and then distribute these conditions within a particular building. Typically, these systems react to changing conditions through a series of processes and as the internal and external temperatures are always fluctuating, there tends to be an overrun between these processes, causing a net excess energy use. A retrofit solution would include very sensitive sensors and algorithms, designed to detect thermodynamic saturation very efficiently, enabling the compressor to operate more efficiently. The compressor itself could be cycled optimally and “freeze over” conditions affecting the evaporator could be avoided.

Boosted in part by strengthening public opinion in San Diego, commercial building energy retrofit activity is already jumping sharply during the first quarter of 2010, according to a report from Airco Energy Solutions LLC. Increased activity will be largely due to “green” activity, spurred by political and environmental pressure and backed up by significant scientific study. It is now becoming particularly appropriate to be sustainable and this trend is likely to carry forward into building retrofit activity. A local San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is now offering energy efficient incentive monies of 14 cents for each kWh saved or up to 50% of the entire HVAC retrofit cost ( $350,000 limit) and offering on-bill financing. The 2010 energy efficiency incentives basically allow commercial buildings to install retrofits, save money, and “go green” with nothing out-of-pocket.
Looking even further ahead on a national scale, within a decade or so it is estimated that half of all retrofit and renovations will be in large part motivated by sustainable concepts and it is further noted that of those who are already engaged in green commercial building retrofit projects, 70% plan to conduct additional initiatives.
