If you have been charged with the responsibility of comparing capital expenditure associated with HVAC install costs, retrofitting or taking no action then you have to take into account more than just the direct costs associated. These days, anything that uses a significant amount of energy is likely to be inefficient and be responsible for too many carbon emissions. It falls to the organization to become sustainable and to ensure that the company's systems are as up-to-date as possible.
HVAC install cost estimates can be quite substantial and capital replacement cost can be difficult to justify, even though there may be long-term saving benefits, in this difficult economic environment. Nevertheless, the company is expected to do something and might want to consider retrofitting as an option. Retrofitting has become very popular over the last few years and numerous organizations have emerged to provide solutions and software products, especially in the area of lighting and HVAC systems. Typically an HVAC system will have been installed into a building when it was initially constructed, as due to its very complexity this option is far more preferable. Replacement can be a very difficult proposition, due to the intricate patchwork of ducting work required. While it is of course possible just to replace the compressor and furnace, typically the distribution system will be the least efficient part of the project and will have deteriorated over time. Where ducting does not move within air conditioned space, unless it is very adequately padded and observed for deterioration and cracking on a regular basis, much of the energy will dissipate in this space. If you're looking at HVAC install cost calculations, remember to add the costs of temperature control systems and electrical estimating and do not underestimate the cost of cleanup, testing balancing and adjustment of the finished product either. You will likely have a minimum amount of downtime to enable you to complete such a replacement and your plans must be adjusted accordingly. Look at retrofitting solutions, especially as legislation is currently being considered within Congress to present grants and incentives to the typical business owner. Should these options be passed and made available via state resources, 50% of the cost of retrofitting could be offered to the company. With a capital cost contained in this way, monthly reductions in utility bill costs could also be realized and the entire project paid for within a very limited amount of time. As organizations may have to account for their energy emitting assets and systems in future, the company that is best prepared and has brought equipment up to the highest possible level of efficiency will also gain reputation in society. Stakeholders and clients alike are unlikely to put up with inefficient productivity, especially if a competitor has taken bolder action.
